Young Rhinos Whitewater Discovery
Young Rhinos Whitewater Discovery programs and events encourage connection with the outdoors, promote continuous self-improvement, and empower participants to expand their horizons through whitewater recreation and exploration.
The project targets underserved communities in Western North Carolina. All equipment is provided by NRC, and scholarships are available for all programs and events to eliminate barriers to participation.
What makes the Young Rhinos Whitewater Discovery project unique is the variety of programs tailored to encourage continuous participation in whitewater sport and engender participants with a lifelong appreciation for pushing themselves to achieve and explore in the outdoors. Participants are encouraged to engage at a number of skill levels and to remain involved as athletes or mentors as they build their whitewater skills. Welcomed into NRC as young “Rhinos” (the NRC mascot since 1990), participants form relationships with young paddlers from around the country at a series of youth outdoor programs, creating an extended community of active, outdoor youth.
