cameron.thackerNRC is excited to welcome the Warren Wilson Canoe & Kayak team as an Affiliate Member. To jump-start their membership, NRC coaches Michael and Zuzana Montagne spent an afternoon with Warren Wilson paddlers at “Devil’s Dip,” an NRC training site on the Tuckasegee River in Bryson City, NC on Sunday, February 16.

Participants worked on ferries, peal-outs, surfing and stroke technique for approximately two hours, with one coach on the bank, while the other assisted from the water. The Warren Wilson Canoe & Kayak team were Intercollegiate National Champions in 2013. Team members paddle seasonally or year-round, and vary in their level of commitment to kayak competition, from carefree enthusiasts to serious competitors. Technical coaching by NRC staff is intended as a supplement to the instruction provided by their coach, John Griffith.

“It was fun to work with the Warren Wilson group,” said Zuzana Montagne, who coached from the bank. “Slalom presents unique and interesting challenges, both for the advanced and the novice kayaker, and though the group includes various ability levels, everyone was able to have fun, improve their skill and participate to the best of their ability.
